FRUIT FLIES — THE FOURTH WALL

3 Performers. 20+ Pieces. 60 Minutes

Few musical ensembles earn top marks for their “deft choreography,” but this is no ordinary ensemble. Part chamber music group, part devised theatre company, part modern dance troupe, part circus act, The Fourth Wall blends music, theatre, dance and acrobatics into a new hybrid art form. In their award-winning variety show Fruit Flies Like a Banana, this trio of musicians creates new interdisciplinary works and reinterprets classic repertoire – all performed in an order chosen by the audience – to make music the leaps off the stage.

Time Flies Like an Arrow… Fruit Flies Like a Banana!!

Every performance of Fruit Flies Like a Banana is different – from show order to parameters to repertoire. We’re always adding new repertoire to specifically suit our audience (such as inside joke for primarily musician audiences or bringing in local celebrities in different towns) and finding new ways to make our friends and fans join in. Fruit Flies Like a Banana was premiered at the IndyFringe Festival in August 2013 and has been performed at festivals, universities, schools, performing arts centers, and on computer screens across the country ever since. In 2022, Fruit Flies Like a Banana jumped across the pond to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with over 50 performances. Critics are RAVING about Fruit Flies Like a Banana!

Fruit Flies Like a Banana is a musical happy place. It’s full of joy and love and passion that never, ever takes itself seriously. If you think you don’t like classical music, go. If you think you do like classical music, seriously go. This is simply, Fringe at its best. Don’t miss it.

— Allison Carter, IndyFringe Talk :: IndyFringe 2014

Deft use of audience participation and a sprinkle of recorded numbers perfectly mixed with the live feed made for a phenomenal hour of fun.

— Matthew J. Palm, Orlando Sentinel :: Orlando (Virtual) Fringe 2020

 Serious music by seriously talented musicians in a show
that doesn’t take itself seriously at all.

— CBC, Manitoba :: Winnipeg Fringe 2016

Their musicianship would be impressive if they just stood still and stared at their music stands and their acrobatics would impress if they never saw an instrument, but together they make stage magic.

— Carl F. Gauze, Archikulture Digest :: Orlando Fringe 2015

The Fourth Wall’s mission is to create programming that engages everyone from elementary school children to classical performance connoisseurs through a new hybrid of the performing arts in which musicians are also actors and dancers.
In a theater, breaking the fourth wall brings the world on stage directly into the audience; as an ensemble, The Fourth Wall, breaks the barrier between serious art and serious fun.
Few musical ensembles earn top marks for their “deft choreography,” (The Wall Street Journal) but The Fourth Wall is no ordinary ensemble. Part chamber music group, part theatre company, part modern dance troupe, part circus act, The Fourth Wall blends music, theatre, dance and acrobatics into a new hybrid art form. This trio of musicians creates new interdisciplinary works and reinterprets classic repertoire to make music that leaps off the stage.
Flutist Hilary Abigana, bass trombonist C. Neil Parsons, and percussionist Greg Jukes founded the ensemble in 2010 out of a shared interest in creating work that stretches the boundaries of instrumental performance. The Fourth Wall inspires and delights audiences across North America with their hybrid arts performances in venues ranging from performing arts centers to elementary school cafegymnatoriums, from an off-Broadway run at the SoHo Playhouse in New York City to ABC Television’s The Gong Show.
The Fourth Wall is a favorite at Fringe theatre festivals in the US and Canada, having sold out shows in Edmonton, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Orlando (Patrons’ Pick, Critics’ Choice, and Veteran Producer awards) and Winnipeg, where they received 5 stars from both the CBC, Manitoba and the Winnipeg Free Press for their vaudeville-inspired show, “Fruit Flies Like a Banana” and their nostalgic journey into childhood, “Fallen from the Toy Box.” In 2022, the ensemble expanded their reach across the Atlantic to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, putting on 51 shows in 25 days at the world’s largest performing arts festival. Their newest show, “Without a Net”, takes their work to literal new heights utilizing a 18’ high circus rig to add aerial acrobatics to the show. “Without a Net” was named Best Family Show at Orlando Fringe in 2023.
