About The Singing Zoologist: Lucas Miller

About Lucas – Lucas Miller, the Singing zoologistLucas Miller has been literally singing the praises of nature for over 30 years. His mission is to inspire people to respect and care for wildlife through creativity, humor, optimism, and energy. Whether through music, storytelling, video, puppets, or any other engaging medium, he brings science to life in a way that’s fun and unforgettable.

His fascination with frogs and toads began as a child growing up in Lexington, Kentucky, and that early passion led him to earn a degree in zoology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1991.

Music has always been a major part of Lucas’s identity. He started with the saxophone and picked up guitar and songwriting in high school, eventually leading several bands that found some success—though never quite hitting the “big time.” That changed after college when he worked aboard an 80-foot sailboat that took kids on field trips to learn about marine ecology. Each cruise featured a time for him to sing sea shanties and nature songs, and it was during those performances that he discovered the perfect blend of his two greatest interests: science and music.

In 1993, he moved to Austin, Texas, and became the first education director at what is now the Austin Zoo (then called Good Day Ranch). There, he refined his unique presentation style and, in 1994, launched his own business, offering on-site educational shows for schools, festivals, libraries, and more.

Since then, Lucas has performed live for millions of children, and countless more have enjoyed his music, videos, and books. He continues to create, inspire, learn, and teach—grateful every day to have built a career around his love for nature. For anyone who shares that love, Lucas Miller is sure to be a kindred spirit.
